6. Women, Social Spaces and the Built Environment

Thea Chambers is director of Mind the Gap inclusive design consultancy.
She has been teaching architectural design at ESALA since 2003. She was Design
Director for inclusive design focused architectural practice: Chambers McMillan
Architects, which included their multi award winning wheelchair accessible family home,
the Ramp House.
Her research looks at making space for children and young people to explore their
understanding and experience of spaces creatively and developing processes that enable
this to feed into the architectural design process. Her work is also focussed on inclusive
processes and design, as her 21 year old is a wheelchair user, so she has acquired
knowledge of the lived everyday experience, having worked with her daughter creatively
to develop structures for her inclusion in creative practices.
